Bad pap smears

I am on my second round of dealing with abnormal paps. My first was 7 years ago. I was diagnosed with mild dysplaslia-HPV low risk positive. Had a leep. Still came back abnormal. My doc wanted to do a cone but I went in for second opnion. Ended up that a lot of the abnormal cells they were seeing were post pregnancy cells. So 6 years later all normal paps I am facing problems again. A month ago I had a pap come back AGUS. So doc did a bunch of biopsies. Everything came back normal except my cervix showed I had mild dysplasia. Had the cone biopsy done last week. Which went fine-except I got a spinal headache. So now I am just waiting for biopsy results. I hate this! Just wondering if theres any one else out there with this frustration who wants to vent. My doc thinks its nothing to worry about. But its hard- the C word is so scary!!

Re: Bad pap smears

Hi,

I'm sorry you're having to deal with all of this. I know how worrisome it all can be, but the good news is that mild dysplasia will usually resolve on its own.

In May of 2005, I had my first abnormal Pap. (I hadn't had a Pap in the three years after my hyst because my doctor told me I didn't need them anymore.) In August of that year, I went in for a follow-up Pap and it was abnormal again. Long story short, I was diagnosed with moderate and severe dysplasia. My mom had just died, and I didn't get treatment at that time (which was stupid!)

After frequent follow-up Paps over the next year and a half, I was diagnosed December 2006 with carcinoma in situ, cancer which hasn't spread yet. I had laser vaporization surgery in May 2007, and all of my follow-up Paps since have been normal. I have to be monitored every three months for two years, but my oncologist is confident that all of the cancer is gone.

Luckily, dysplasia and cervical cancer are very treatable and very slow to progress. So, while it can be upsetting, it's not nearly as bad as it could be.

Good luck and please let us know how you're doing. My prayers are with you that your biopsy will be remarkably unremarkable.

Hugs,

Lisa

Re: Bad pap smears

Lisa-
Thanks for the reply. Sounds as if you have been through a heck of a lot more than me. But thats great that you are fine now. It really opens your eyes when something effects your health. I have decided that I really need to start eating better and taking care of myself. I certainly want to be around to see my boys grow up. I always thought I was young(32) and took my health for granted. But the truth is that cancer or anything else can happen to anyone at any age.
I did get my biopsy results back and they were fine Everything came back normal and even the dysplasia had disappeared (in the 2 weekes time from when he did the colp). The reason we did the cone is because my pap came back AGUS. But Im all for being overly cautious. To me its better than not being and missing something serious. So now I go back for a repeat pap in 4 months. I am a little unclear on what made it return in 7 years but my doc really couldnt say for sure. He thought it was possible that all the cells werent removed with the leep-who knows.
Its such a horrible feeling thinking there might be something wrong with you.Its nice to know there are people out there who have similar experiences.Especially with good outcomes!
Best wishes to you on a liftetime full of normal paps!
Thanks-Anne
