ASCUS/HPV, then ASCUS w/NEGATIVE HPV ??

Hi - just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I had my first abnormal pap last year, which showed ASCUS rating and POSITIVE for HPV. My GYN did a colposcopy and biopsied two small areas of my cervix. The biopsy result was very mild dysplasia and she wanted to do another pap in 4 months. When I had that pap, it was normal.

Now 6 months later, I just had a pap that came back ASCUS again, but NEGATIVE for HPV. What is going on? I haven't had a chance to talk to the dr yet, but did speak to her nurse. The nurse told me that my body has most likely "cleared" the HPV. I am wondering why the pap was still ASCUS? She said it could be stress?? As a matter of fact, I have been under an extreme level of stress due to a horrific break-up of a relationship and several other things. Could the stress be causing my ASCUS reading? She said the dr is not worried and that I don't need another pap for a year, however, with an ASCUS reading, I want one again in 4 months. I'm scared....has anyone had this happen, a positive HPV result, and then a negative one?

Please let me know

Re: ASCUS/HPV, then ASCUS w/NEGATIVE HPV ??

Hi,

It's possible to have ASC-US Pap results without having HPV. Various factors, such as baterial or yeast infections, douching or having sex before the Pap test, tampon use, and stress can all cause changes to the cells.

However, for your own peace of mind, I would go ahead and get another Pap in four months. Paps can sometimes miss things, and it wouldn't hurt to do another, just to be safe.

Good luck!

Lisa

Hi, yes I would agree with Lisa and have another pap test in few months time. i've done a lot of research on this too, and it appears that between 10-30% of pap tests are " false negatives", they rely on a good test being done by the nurse and excellent interpretation of the cells by the pathologist....and as Lisa says, things can get missed. I also understand that with a good diet and stress relief it is possible for our bodies to fight the HPV virus. I'm still researching into HPV as here in England we do not seem to take it as a serious matter and just deal with the abnormal cells, with loop or cone procedures. I'm trying hard to get a "private" test for HPV and to find out my "strain" if I'm a carrier....only a few of the 100 various strains are carcinogenic.
regards
Hattie
