can you give hpv to someone through oral sex?

Research isn't 100% clear on this yet. It probably is, but it probably doesn't have much of an effect. There's some evidence that HPV in your throat increases the chances of getting throat cancer. However, the changes of throat cancer are very small anyway, it really doesn't make much of a difference.

ˆˆˆwhat??? Research is very clear, yes, it can be transmitted orally - to the genitals and to the throat. Manually to. It is very easy to transmit. And just because oral cancer isn't common, doesn't mean the exposure isn't there.

Anyway, yes, you can definitely give (and receive) HPV through oral sex.

Sorry, I wasn't really clear. According to the last thing I heard from the CDC (of course, they may have come out with something new recently), it IS possible to transmit HPV through oral sex, but it's much easier to transmit genitally.

And also just to be entirely clear, oral HPV substantially increases your risk of throat cancer if you have it (by about 32 times). However, like I said, this cancer does not happen very often, so it's not something that is a huge, huge concern. Genital HPV and cervical cancer is a much more frequent problem.

The researchers who did that study also said that they couldn't exclude the possibility that oral HPV can be transmitted through kissing.
