Do Drs. test for HPV at the same time of your PAP?
Is that routine? Or do they inform you they'll test for HPV. I'm a 36 year old mom of 2, done having kids..husband had vasectomy 4 years ago..I had endometrial ablation almost 2 years ago..They did a biopsy prior to the ablation that came back normal. In february I had an abnormal PAP, all they told me then was that it showed atypical squamous cells, and to repeat in 3 months because it could have been a small infection of some sort. Repeated last month and got a call today to tell me doctor wants to do a colposcopy now because PAP is still abnormal. That's all they told me..They never mentioned HPV..but last PAP he took a small sample and said they could perform more tests if they needed to..The more I read about it the more worried I get that they haven't told me much yet..I'm afraid really bad news are awaiting me when I finally get to see him.
I guess my question is: is it possible I was tested for HPV and never told the result?.
Thanks,
Dolores
Re: Do Drs. test for HPV at the same time of your PAP?
My doctor asked if I wanted the HPV test when I went in for my most recent pap. The test results came back on the same paper as the Pap results. Call your doctor's office and ask if the doctor performed the HPV test. Also ask for a copy of the pathology report. I would assume you would have been asked if you wanted the test and that you would be told of the results if they had taken one.
Knowledge is power. If I don't understand things, I become more fearful. I suggest you read all you can about the HPV test and the virus itself. I would say the Center for Disease Control is a good place to start.
Ask whatever questions you have, we'll do our best to answer them.

Re: Do Drs. test for HPV at the same time of your PAP?
Hi Dolores, I am going through the same thing you are right now. I had endometrial ablation 1 year ago because of an abnormal pap smear. In March of this year, my pap came back abnormal with atypical squamous cells. The nurse said it was nothing to worry about because my hpv came back negative. They want to see me in 3 months. It is scary because 7 years ago I had cervical cancer. From what I read, the atypical cells is nothing to worry about, just something to keep an eye on if your hpv is negative. If it were me, I would call the office and ask if they tested you for hpv. Maybe this is the reason your doctor wants to see you, to give you the hpv test when you get the copolscopy. The hpv can be active or inactive, so maybe that is why he is waiting. Good luck to you, I will keep you in my prayers.
