Great question Malbrecht! I think the real question is what percent of women who have been exposed to the strains of high risk HPV that cause cervical cancer actually DEVELOP cancer.
Something like 80% of women who have been sexually active at any point in their life have been exposed to HPV by the time they are 50. I suspect with more current research those numbers will actually be much higher, but I don't know for certain. Most women who are exposed to HPV can fight the virus so it doesn't cause cell damage in the cervix.
