How is HPV first contacted?

My husband and I were both sworn virgins due to religious reasons when we married 6 years ago, but soon after marriage and our first sexual encounters I started noticing black bumps around my pelvic mid-section. I have had regular PAP-tests done before & after they first appeared and was told they may be HPV genital warts or just infected hairs from shaving. The tests were inconclusive. My huband & I were then asked about our sexual history & we both swore each other were our only ones. My husband does have a history of warts, dry broken skin, and exema on his hands though. Could this be another cause besides sexual contact? We are both terrified that either of us could be a carrier and somehow infected the other. It has also created some mis-trust about each others sexual history. We are both very strong in our beliefs and made vows in our youth to stay pure until marriage. I don't want to believe he infected me through another sexual partner. Please set my mind at ease.

Re: How is HPV first contacted?

Hello stormkat, I have been told similar stories by healthcare professionals to what you have explained. One of the stories was about a couple who was abstinent, she found out she had HPV and they demanded it was not possible but it was-----they both insist they never had sex but did have some sexual contact (hand job, touching). Another story was of a lady in her late 60's, her husband had passed away a few years before she was diagnosed with HPV and their only sexual partners were eachother. They say HPV is so common but they don't have answers to questions like this. Unless either of you had sexual contact with another person (any skin to skin contact) then I do believe one of you carried it and passed it on. Warts on your hands are different strains than those on your genitals, so I don't think that would be a cause (could be wrong). Just to let you know my situtation, I was married over 16 years before I found out I had HPV, I had warts, if we played the blame game I would have looked like the guilty one and I've never had sex with anybody but my husband since before we were married. He has never had genital warts. There is some information on HPV if you go to the center for disease control.
