Hpv - 30 years married

I have just been diagnosed with Cin 1 and Cin 2 and HPV. I have been married for 30 years and have only had one sexual partner--my husband. Is it possible that he gave me this more than 30 years ago? Why had it never been picked up on a smear and only come to light following biopsy of my cervix to investigate irregular bleeding? I am worried that I may not know whether my husband has been unfaithful.

Re: Hpv

Jackie, it is entirely possible that you were exposed to HPV 30 years ago and that it is just now showing up. There are several reasons for this. First of all, it can take years for HPV to cause damage. Secondly, the test for detecting an active HPV/dna test was approved only 4 or 5 years ago. Doctors are just recently ( in the last year or two) beginning to use to test regularly on women who are over 30 years old.

I was exposed to high risk HPV at least 16 years ago, but my doctor offered the HPV/dna test last December. She had only been offering them for a few months prior to that.

What has your doctor said will be your next step? a colposcopy? and ECC (endocervical curettage)? have you schedule that yet?

Please write back. We'll do our best to answer your questions. It can be so very confusing.

Re: Hpv

I'm glad. When you go for your colpo, ask if the doctor will do an ECC. It is painful for a minute or so, but the pain goes away and the benefits of knowing far outweight the discomfort and inconvenience!
