Jackie, it is entirely possible that you were exposed to HPV 30 years ago and that it is just now showing up. There are several reasons for this. First of all, it can take years for HPV to cause damage. Secondly, the test for detecting an active HPV/dna test was approved only 4 or 5 years ago. Doctors are just recently ( in the last year or two) beginning to use to test regularly on women who are over 30 years old.
I was exposed to high risk HPV at least 16 years ago, but my doctor offered the HPV/dna test last December. She had only been offering them for a few months prior to that.
What has your doctor said will be your next step? a colposcopy? and ECC (endocervical curettage)? have you schedule that yet?
