1. I don't know about the sterility of the instruments used during a legal abortion. But I would be more inclined to think a person was exposed to HPV during sexual contact (not just intercourse) since HPV is so contagious and prevalent among people who have more than one sexual partner (not just intercourse) in a lifetime.
2. It is possible. Perhaps atypical cells are coming from the cervical os (cervical canal).
3. If either of the partners has ever had intercourse (or sexual contact) with someone, then it is possible to have been exposed to at least one strain of HPV. The more partners, I assume the likelihood of being exposed increases.
