| Re: Need answers about HPV and abnormal cells?
High risk HPV can lead to cancer (not just cervical) if the body doesn't fight the virus, if the atypical cells are left undetected and/or untreated.
I'm a little curious as to why your doctor did a LEEP if the cervical biopsy (which I assume happened when you had a colposcopy) came back without dysplasia. Did you actually receive copies of your pathology reports (from the pap and from the colpo+biopsy)? If not, I HIGHLY recommend you get those. They will give you a lot more information.
I also suggest you call your doctor's office after a week to 10 days to see if the pathology report (from the D&C and LEEP). I'd also call back and ask why the LEEP was performed.
How is all of that related to HPV? High risk HPV can cause cell changes in the genitals (cervix, vagina, vulva, anus, penis, mouth/throat). I *think* some of the cells in the upper 2/3 (glandular cells) are also in the uterus. My doctor did a D&C and uterine biopsy when she did my cold knife cone. I think she did that because I had already been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in situ (which are the cells in the upper 2/3 of the cervix).
I hope that helps.
