I had a pap done about a month ago and found that I have HPV? This scared the **** out of me, I am really scared? The doc said that I should come in early March to have another done, said its not normal to have this but it isnt a serious case, he also said that its been dormant for 2 to 3 years but now I am really scared. What should I do? How do I handle this and what should I do in the meantime? Also, will it go away? What are the statastics, how many people can get it? Is it really common? Should I be embarrased about it? I feel like filth now? I am really depressed about this

It is extremely common. Depending on your source, anywhere from 75% to 99% of sexually active people will get it at some point in their lives.

As for treatment, all you can do it watch for the effects. Either it stops having any, or the effects get worse, in which case it needs to be treated. I'm surprised your doc hasn't scheduled a colposcopy for you. Did he say anything about that?

In the meantime, stay healthy. And supposedly eating foods rich in anti-oxidants is good for fighting off the effects of the virus.

I'm curious as to your doctors comment that it has been domant for 2-3 years. Did you previously test positive for HPV? If not, on what basis is he making this comment. While HPV can remain dormant for much more than 2-3 years, you can also have symptoms within a month of contracting HPV. I also wonder why your doctor has not scheduled a colposcopy (viewing the area using a colposcope, kind of alike a microscope after applying acetic acid to the area). This better helps to visualize any current lesions. You should definitely ask about this and if I were you, I surely wouldn't be waiting until March.

These ladies are asking some great questions. I just have one more (because they said everything else I would have said) is, what type of HPV have you been diagnosed with (high risk or low risk) and what type were you diagnosed with before? And, how old are you?
