The test to determine the strain of HPV is called in situ hybridization and it is done on the DNA of the HPV in the tissue obtained through a biopsy. Recent studies at John's Hopkins Oncology Center have shown that 25% of head/neck (which includes oral) cancers are caused by HPV and of those 90% were HPV type 16, one of the high risk (most aggressive for malignancy) types.
