Its been 2 years since my last pap. I went last week and got one. I have abnormal cells. My doctor told me that the body usually fight it off, but to come back in 3 months. Does that mean I could have gotten it in those 2 years? Is there any way to tell time line wise how long I have had it? Can they tell if its cancerous and that’s why they want me to come back? It some times hurts when I first start having sex and I some times I lightly bleed, is that the HPV? What should I tell the guy?

It could possibly be cancerous, or turn cancerous, but most likely all will be fine. There is no way to know when you got it for sure, as it can take months or even years to show up. Be sure to use condoms to minimize the chance of spreading it. I don't know if it is causing you to bleed, but probaby not. And, of course, you should tell your BF. Wouldn't you want to know if he had it?

If you have vaginal lesions or vaginal warts these could cause bleeding during intercourse. Obviously, unless they are visible at the vaginal entrance you would need an internal exam and possibly colposcopy to visualize the lesions. What exactly did your doctor say you would fight off in two years? Did he mention HPV because you didn't specifically say you have been diagnosed with HPV. Unless your PAP came back grossly abnormal another PAP in 3 months would be reasonable. If at that time it comes back more abnormal than this one he should do a biopsy and you should ask that the HPV test be done as well at that time. Having to discuss this topic with your BF (while it is the right thing to do) can be emotionally difficult because you first have to come to grips with your own disease, your feelings about it and yourself. Once people find they have incurable HPV it is often a very difficult time. They feel ashamed and unfortunately there is still a stigma attached to STD's. Hope this helps.
