With abnormal pap results it is usually a colposcopy and ECC. The Dr. looks at the cervix under magnification and applies an acetic acid (vinegar) solution. If any abnormal areas (which is what the acetic solution causes to show up) the area is then biopsied (its called a punch biopsy and it is a very very small amount of tissue).
If an ECC wasn't mentioned, make sure to ask about why. ECC (Endo Cervical Curretage) samples the cells within the cervical canal, where a pap, Drs and biopsies don't normally get.
