Once you have HPV, you have it for life. Your immune system can keep the virus "in check" and it can remain dormant for months, years even decades. Just because you have negative Paps doens't meant you can't transmit the virus. HPV does not only affect the cervix but can involve any portion of the vagina, vulva, labia, cervix, perineum and anus. Asymptomatic transmission, transmission while having no symptoms is what happens with men transmitting it to women all the time, why people think it doesn't happen the other way around baffles me. They used to say you couldn't get herpes unless you were having an outbreak, now that's found not to be true and you can spread herpes at any time. HPV is no different.
