Unfortunately, yes. Once you contract HPV your body will retain the virus. However this does not mean that you will be dealing with symptoms your whole life. Most people's immune system works to keep the virus asymptomatic. Only a small percentage of people have recurrent problems with HPV and go on to develop cancer from the high risk type. Low risk genital warts can always be frozen off, surgically removed or addressed through the use of various pharmaceutical agents.
