Yes. The HPV/dna test was approved by the FDA (in the USA) only about 6 years ago, so before that the only way a woman or doctor knew she had high risk HPV was because she had cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer.
My husband and I have been together, monogamously, for 17 years and I was just diagnosed with high risk HPV last year because my doctor did the HPV/dna test with my pap that year. Thank God she did. It led to my eventual diagnosis of cervical cancer at such an early stage that after only one year I've been treated and released from my gyn/oncologist.
