Condoms do not offer complete protection against HPV since it is transmitted by skin to skin contact. If you are in a long term monogamous relationship, then there are two schools of thought. One says that condoms are not needed. The other says that condoms will help the body fight the virus by reducing the repeated exposure to the virus while the body is healing.
My husband and I did not use condoms (we have been monogamous for 17 years). I know a woman on another board here at HB who is using them with her husband.
Of course, if either of you has a new partner and returns to this relationship, then the chances of acquiring (and spreading) another strain of HPV is very possible.
