There are over 100 strains of HPV. More than 30 strains affect the genitals (vulva, vagina, cervix, penis, anus/rectum, mouth/throat). Of those 30 strains, some are low risk (and can cause genital warts) others are high risk (and can lead to cancer, worst case scenario). It is possible to have low risk and high risk HPV. It is also possible to have more than one strain of low risk and/or high risk HPV.
Just because someone has been exposed to (or has been positively identified as having) HPV (low risk or high risk) doesn't mean he/she will have problems (warts or cancer) from the virus.
