Hello,
Out of curiosity when I went to the gyn on Friday I had asked if I ever been tested for HPV. He said no but that I was exposed to it (based on the findings from the colopsy (sorry i spelled that wrong), I have had 2 abnormal paps and both times I had the cryosurgery done.
He asked if I wanted to be tested and he mentioned that it really doesn't make a difference since my paps have been normal now for over 2 yrs ( I go every 6 months).
Just curious if it matters that I never knew which type/grade I had? Also, if the paps are normal now that means that I no longer have it?
Sorry not too familiar with this, ask me about herpes and I could write a book LOL
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Re: Does it matter that I dont know what type I had?
hi Chick, routinely they don't test for it, but it can show up in your pap smear results as abnormal cells, which will cause abnormal pap results, they grade it as stage one thru five, usually if its stage 1 or 2 they don't type or tell you, most of these they don't treat or do biospies for just tell you to come back in three months for a repeat.. In most women the virus goes away by itself within two years, pap smears show abnormal cells in the cervics but the HPV test will tell if these cells were caused by HPV or not. Once it is gone, its gone unless you get re-infected... Just like Herpes if its active you can pass it during sexual relations...Hope I helped some been in that boat too. take care Chick..........
Re: Does it matter that I dont know what type I had?
You could still have an HPV infection even if your paps are normal, but you are right that it is very likely gone.
You could get tested if you want, but most doctors don't do the type of testing where they tell you which particular strain you have. They will test you for high risk (cancer causing) strains only. It will either be positive or negative.
If it's positve, though, this might be a different HPV infection than before. You might have fought off the other HPV and acquired a new one. Even if it's negative, you could still have low risk HPV.
If might be a good idea to get that test just for your own personal knowledge, but it probably won't shed any light on your past issues.
Re: Does it matter that I dont know what type I had?
hey there dont see you on this board, yes you most likely have high risk like i do. which is non wart type. 75% of women with herpes have hpv too based on statistics my doc told me. otherwise, i wouldnt worry its prob cleared, unlike herpes it doesnt show its face
