How long can HPV lay dormant in your body ?

I have recently been diagnosed and my doctor told me it can lay dormant for up to 5 years . Is this true ? because my current partner and I are having somne serious issues because of this .

UP TO 5 years? never heard that one.

It can lay dormant forever, which means it could also just reactivate any time between immediately and forever. I'm pretty sure forever is longer than 5 years.

My Dr. told me it could have been dormant for around 7 years.
