a little history
had abnormal pap and had colp in april 2008 and was told that i have mild dypsplayia then my doctor suggested to have paps every 3 months.Since then i had three normal paps and this last pap it was abnormal and I test postivie for hvp and had ascus. Now i ask the nurse in 2008 did i have hvp and see told me yes. I was so shocked and upset to say the least because i was never told about hvp. I am worried that its has turned into moderate dysplasia or even worse. Not mention i am engaged and my fiancee has been faithful so have I. His is worried for himself and me. Any advice would help to ease my mind. I am going to have a second colp by the end of this month.
Hi efda, I know the diagnosis is shocking and there is so much information about HPV that it is difficult to know which information applies to you and your situation.
It sounds to me like the damage from HPV is still mild since you have the ASCUS diagnosis. You might ask your doctor if he/she thinks an ECC (endocervical curettage) would be a good test to run. The ECC is a scraping of the cervical canal to detect abnormal cells in there.
Finally, HPV is not a good test of fidelity. Often the HPV is in the body for months, years, or decades before the damage is identified, especially with high risk HPV.
Honestly, the ECC isn't comfortable, but it only lasts a few seconds. Afterwards, I took some ibuprofen and had what felt like mild period cramps for a few hours. Considering that the ECC is the only non-surgical way the doctor can sample those cells, it was worth it for me. The cells in the canal are a different type of cell than the cells on the outer cervix.
