HPV and immune system

I contracted hpv (human papilloma virus) from my husband after 25 years of marriage. I have read recently that a persons immune system will clear hpv within 7 to 18 months. (Lancet study). Is it likely that my husband has been carrying the hpv virus around for 25 years? Are there any other studies with differing results? If the immune system does normally clear the virus can it come back later?
