Hypoglycemia? - Hypoglycemia Message Board

Since I was a small child I've gotten very irritable and grouchy when hungry. I have never been diagnosed with hypoglycemia, but I have been having worsening symptoms of it in the last few months. I went to the ER twice over the summer feeling weak, shakey, sweating, heart pounding, and like I was going to faint, as a result of hunger. They did a finger jab blood sugar test and my sugar was 100 - which they told me was absolutely normal and that nothing was wrong with me. I also had my thyroids checked twice and was told they were normal.

However, despite what the doctor told me, I KNOW I have some kind of blood sugar problem because when I get hungry I get so weak, shaky, faint, etc. and it gets worse the hungrier I get and it abates when I eat. Also, when I eat a high-carb meal, my heart pounds for hours after. I don't think it's normal to react this strongly to hunger (for example, I don't not TOUCH soda or pizza because my heart would give me crazy palpitations if I did).

It might also help to know that I am very thin with an insane metabolism. I have to eat ALL DAY LONG to avoid hunger and I have trouble maintaining my weight.

Does this sound like hypoglycemia to you guys, or what? The symptoms really scare me and I'm not sure if they're dangerous or not. I would also appreciate tips on managing this, because I feel like I have to eat constantly to avoid feeling bad.

Your eating all of the time might be the problem. Also, with you being very thin, it is easy to feel the change in heart rhythms. Because of this, you can have the feeling of palpitations easier than a larger person would. Also, stress and activity raise the heart rate.

Insulin must bind with sugar in order for your cells to turn them into energy. A pancreas that is turned on all of the time has a tendency to misfire. Look at it like if you left your car running all of the time. You turn the pancreas up so that it is putting out insulin to cover your intake. There would be times, especially with high carb meals, that too much is put out. I would go to the Dr and have them put me on a meal plan to cover both issues, the weight and the hypo's,. I would also get my own meter so I can track what I get when I feel bad. Take all of that in with you and you should leave with a plan that works for you. Good luck
