Hi Big Tex,
I had excessive bleeding caused from fibroid tumors. For 4 years I tried lots of natural supplements to shrink the fibroids and nothing worked for me. The Drs. wanted to wait before suggesting surgery because I was almost to menapause age and sometimes the fibroids shrink during that time. I was haivng 2 periods a month. My GYN suggested progesterone creme. It does work. You have to weigh the pros and cons of using progesterone. Finally I got to the point where I had to much pain, bleeding and anemia from blood loss, and decided to have a hysto leaving in my ovaries. For me, this turned out to be a great decision. I have felt so much better since the surgery. But, its an individual decision that each woman has to make.
There are many other questions you need to factor in a decision like that. Such as, does your wife have fibroids too? Is she in pain? How bad is the bleeding? Are you done having children? Did you know if she has a hysto with ovaries out it will plunge her into instant menapause? There are many different variables to consider.
There are other boards on the net dedicated to hystorectomies and what is best for you. Do a search on google.
Good luck
