TAH or SAH ??? - Hysterectomy Message Board

Hello all

I am scheduled for hysterectomy late April and have been given the option of keeping my cervix by a somewhat over-zealous consultant. He will be expecting me to come up with a good arguement against keeping it if I ask him to take it all out.

My main concerns are that I have suffered from cervical erosion in the past and this has dogged me for the past 10 years. I also suffer from endometriosis and adenomyosis (the main reason for the surgery). I am worried that if I keep my cervix then I will continue to get the symptoms from erosion and also that I will still get a "mini period".

any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Ktee,

With your history Im surprised he would suggest you leave the cervix. I would take it out now, you dont want to have problems and have to have another surgery later.

I had a TVH/BSO 4 years ago for endometriosis. Are you going to remove the ovaries also? I think that was the hardest decision for me, since they were normal. But that is what feeds the endo.

I have been advised by 2 gynos to keep my ovaries as I am only 40 y/old, unless they look like they need removing. I did have a cyst on right ovary last time they did a hysteroscopy on me so he will look at that again.

I would prefer to have cervix removed but I just want to be in a postion where I can put my points across to him in a good, assertive way.

How have you been since your hyster? Well I hope. Did it cure your endo probs?

Im doing good with it now but had problems at first. I went on lupron for 3 months before the hyst to help kill the endo. I had great pain relief from the lupron alone, but some pretty severe menopause symptons. After the hyst I had to go another 3 months with no estrogen. It was hard but worth it to have no pain. A few months after being on estrogen the endo returned, you never forget that pain! So my Dr took me off the estrogen for 4 months. I have been painfree from endo for about 2 years now and using a estrogen patch with no problems.

I think if I had been dx sooner I wouldn't of had so many problems. By the time I found a good Dr the endo had grown too much, Dr said it was severe and I had proberly had it for more than 20 years. I had too much for him to remove by lap so thats why I had the hysterectomy with my ovaries removed. I was 41 at the time of the hyst, 45 now.

since we decided on the surgery my body seems to have gone into some kind of weird hormone overdrive..... everything seems swollen and I feel like im 140 not 40 y/o as the pain just wont go away this month. Guess my brain has just informed my ovaries about what to expect and they are not happy with the decision. They will just have to get used to it.
