24 & complete hysterectomy on 19th - Hysterectomy Message Board

I am so scared. I am 24 yrs old with a 2 yr old some and 3 month old daughter. I am going in for surgery on the 19th for a complete hyster. I have had major complications the past 6 years. My doc would have done this sooner had it not been for me trying to have children. Now that I have my children he is going to go ahead and take everything. I have PCOS and endo. We have tried every other treatment imaginable with no success. I am terrified of this surgery but am also tired of hurting all the time. What should I expect with this? I know I will have to take hormones but I am so scared it will completely change who I am. Is there anything I should know about?

Is there a reason you have to have a complete hysterectomy?? Can't they leave one or two ovaries in?? Usually they try to keep the ovaries if they can, since they produce so many hormones and prevent you from having to take HRT. Have you gotten a second opinion?

Yes. This is like the fourth opinion. They can't leave the ovaries due to there are several problems with them. I get cyst on them that require surgery all the time and I can't keep having surgery every year for them.

We are a young couple also, my wife is only 32 yrs old and she has fib. on her uterus which has not gone away and we are now considering surgery to remove her uterus. She doesn't really want a full hysterectomy so she doesnt have to deal with taking medication, we already have 3 children and we're not having anymore, thank God we had the chance to have kids b4 this came along but her health is now more important.

It sounds like you've gotten enough proof that you do need a full hyst. You might find that it makes you feel better than you ever have before. You always hear the horror stories but just as often there are women who say "I wish I'd done it sooner!" Best of luck.....
