Re: Hysterectomy

I'm considering having a hysterectomy due to a failed ablation. I don't have cancer or endo, so I'm not sure if it would be worth it just to stop my periods. What's the recovery like? And are there any long-term side effects?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Recovery from hysterectomy - what's it like?

I had a Hysterectomy at 35 due to a Melon-Size Fybroid. I am 38 years old now ... and it was the best thing I ever ever did! Don't miss that organ at all!!

The recovery process is not fun, but really not that bad... I was up and around within the first two weeks but still needed pain medication on and off for few weeks due to back and abdomen pain. Since the Fybroid had caused me so much pain and discomfort prior, I think that I actually happily skipped into my OB/GYN's office at my 2 week check-up when most gals walk in bent over!

The very worst part of the Hysterectomy is waking up right after the surgery. It is very very painful - no one can prepare you for that kind of pain. But, as soon as you get on the morphine drip you will forget about everything! You usually spend 3 nights in the hospital for recovery ... I don't remember much of that time due to the pain medication, but I do remember that getting up to go use the restroom was a very painful and slow process! But it really is amazing how quickly your body bounces back after such a surgery.

Just make sure and have someone there to help you at home for the first couple weeks at the least. My husband is a pilot so could not be home for my entire recovery to help me ... luckily my mom came and stayed two weeks and that really was great. It is very difficult to walk around, especially up and down stairs for the first couple weeks. And you should definitely not lift anything (such as laundry baskets, grocery bags, etc)! So make sure and have someone there for you!

Well ... I hope that helps a little? Let me know if you have any specific questions ... I will try and answer with the best of my abilities!
Good luck with your desicion!

KH

Yes, it does help. Thank you so much for responding. I haven't made a decision yet, but at least now I have information to help me make that decision.

Also, depends what they remove as well. At least with me, I did spot for about 6 weeks after the operation. So you might want to use the liners during that time.

Gee KH, you sound like you had the exact thing I did. I was same age, and melon size fibroid. I didn't want the operation at first. But after I had it, I was like why was I fighting that cause this is great now.

Thumbs up Re: Recovery from hysterectomy - what's it like?

I am 46 years old and no children.
I went through a hysterectomy an August 26th, 2005. I had adenomyosis. Surgery went fine, but now I'm having a pinkish discharge and I think it's from over doing myself. Called the doctor, he said that it was normal for that to happen it's only been a little over a week just to take it easy and get some rest.
I know that I made the right choice and that in time I will feel a whole lot better. imagine being on your period for three months straight. I'm feeling alot better today then I have felt in years. I will right again after I recover all the way to let everyone know how my recovery went thanks for reading.
