| Re: Recovery from hysterectomy - what's it like?
I had a Hysterectomy at 35 due to a Melon-Size Fybroid. I am 38 years old now ... and it was the best thing I ever ever did! Don't miss that organ at all!!
The recovery process is not fun, but really not that bad... I was up and around within the first two weeks but still needed pain medication on and off for few weeks due to back and abdomen pain. Since the Fybroid had caused me so much pain and discomfort prior, I think that I actually happily skipped into my OB/GYN's office at my 2 week check-up when most gals walk in bent over!
The very worst part of the Hysterectomy is waking up right after the surgery. It is very very painful - no one can prepare you for that kind of pain. But, as soon as you get on the morphine drip you will forget about everything! You usually spend 3 nights in the hospital for recovery ... I don't remember much of that time due to the pain medication, but I do remember that getting up to go use the restroom was a very painful and slow process! But it really is amazing how quickly your body bounces back after such a surgery.
Just make sure and have someone there to help you at home for the first couple weeks at the least. My husband is a pilot so could not be home for my entire recovery to help me ... luckily my mom came and stayed two weeks and that really was great. It is very difficult to walk around, especially up and down stairs for the first couple weeks. And you should definitely not lift anything (such as laundry baskets, grocery bags, etc)! So make sure and have someone there for you!
Well ... I hope that helps a little? Let me know if you have any specific questions ... I will try and answer with the best of my abilities!
Good luck with your desicion!
