Question Questions about having just the uterus taken out?

Hello ,
I would like to ask a question to anyone who has had just there uterus removed, and kept there ovaries. After your surgery did you go threw surgical menopause? I was recently informed that sometimes this can happen even after a woman keeps her ovaries. I was told and under the impression this couldn't happen. I have also heard that rapid aging will happen after a hysterectomy. Is that true?

Re: Questions about having just the uterus taken out?

HI-
I had my uterus removed during a c-section in the birth of my second child in Jan. I didnt have any surgical menopause, and no rapid aging-other than would occur running after 2 kids. I do have hot flashes, and my pms symptoms like moodiness, chocolate cravings, etc are more noticeable than before.

Re: Questions about having just the uterus taken out?

Hi

I had full uterus (inc cervix) removed April this year but kept ovaries. I had already started getting peri-menopausal symptoms and kind of expected my ovaries to fail on me after the surgery as I was warned that this can happen. Also that your ovaries are likely to fail within 5 years but so far so good. I still feel a little discomfort (not proper pain) during ovulation but this is about once every 6 weeks. I also find that my body temp is warmer especially at night but not especially worrying. My cravings for fresh bread and chocolate seem to have gone too. Rapid aging does not occur by simply having a total or sub tot hyst, however by removing ovaries, you are at a greater risk of decreasing your bone density which is associated with old-age so that may be where the comments come from ?

good luck
ktee

Re: Questions about having just the uterus taken out?

Hi Ktee,
I have heard of losing bone mass after a total hyst, but that wasn't what I meant. I have been told and read that after a total hyst rapid aging happens. Wrinkles, thin skin, age spots etc. That is what I was referring too. But I have never really got the full details of what happens if one keeps there ovaries.

I kept my ovaries and that has been more than six years since my surgery. I would still get PMS, but no other symptoms. I am now beginning to have a few peri-menopause symtoms, but I might would have done that anyway since I am now 42.

FairyM

Oh, see what you mean.

Nope, hair still grey, boobs still sag But no new signs of aging for me.

A colleague of mine had to have radical hyster when she was 25 due to uterine cancer and she still looks the same 10 years on.

regards

I guess it must just depend then. Good to know that it doesn't always have to be a bad thing!

Have had Hysterectomy for 20 years

I had a hysterectomy 20 years ago - I am now 55. I don't look 55. Uterus/Cervix, 1-1/2 ovaries taken, and all that happened, but not for a few years, was some weight gain, which I know women don't want. I did have to take Premarin for 15 years, and had he mammograms which showed no problems. The premarin absolutely did help, regardless what others may think about hormones. But, hormones are not for everyone; they did help me. I did not feel older, or had any more wrinkles. I think he big thing is taking good care of yourself afterward. There will be some emotional up and downs, but I am not sure if it was from the hormone fluctuations or just part of menopause, which I did go through.
