New - pessary unit after hyst?

I had a hyst. 10 months ago to correct prolapse but now the prolapse is back. Has anyone had a pessary unit put in to correct prolapse? Good or bad idea?

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

I have not had a pessiary put in. My doctor just diagnosed me with prolapse and said a pessiary was only for non surgical patients. I thought that after surgery the prolapse could not return but if yours has returned I wonder if mine will? Please let me know what your doc says.

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Yes, my prolapse did return in just 7 or 8 months. Both my local gyn. and a "second opinion" specialist said I could have a pessary unit placed but they also said a second surgery which I am really trying to avoid. My original prolapse was pretty bad.

Question Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

I hope a few people will chime in about this.

Has any one had success with a pessary AFTER hysterectomy? I have two types of prolapse, and the urologist does not want to do the surgery because my bladder does not contract. Am taking steps to find out the reason for that...with no help from him, I might add! Mean time, he suggested a pessary, but all the literature seems to assume there is a uterus (diagrams, etcs) to facilitate a positive placement outcome. My nurse practicioner (sp?) is willing to give it a try. NO GYN here who will accept medicare. I am thinking of asking him to do the one prolapse (surgery) and leave the bladder prolapse alone. It causes me the least problem. I HAVE to do some thing soon!

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Hi,

I am sorry that you are having so much trouble with your prolapses. I just had a hysterectomy 4 1/2 weeks ago with a uterus and bladder prolapse. I had a total abdominal hysterectomy and ovaries and tubes out and bladder lifted. So far, it seems to be working ok. My uro dr. says it takes time to get full control of my bladder back again.

In my opinion, you need to go and see or talk to some more drs. Specialists would be the best. Go out of county or state if you need to. Did you mean the nurse practitioner would do the prolapse lift or the pessary??? I hope the later and not the first. I would think that a nurse practitioner would not have the knowledge to fix the prolapse.

Try to research some of the large, learning hospitals on the internet. I bet they could do both or all surgeries at once!!!

take care and I hope you get some good help.

Wannabe

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Thanks for taking the time to provide a response, "wannabe"!

My issue is money. I have medicare, but no supplemental. The latter is not available in the USVI. I have no money to travel to the states.

That is why I am seeking out ladies who may have experienced this medical problem. I noticed on the board that a couple of people have had to repeat prolapse surgery, (apparently) in spite of following doctors' orders after the first time. This interested me because I haven't had it done yet. Yes, the nurse p. was talking about the pessary, not the surgery! However, I am finding that there is not much data out there on pessaries to begin with, and that most docs don't have that much experience with them, period. The focus is on surgery. I would just like to hear from any one who does not have a uterus and who has tried a pessary, whether it worked out or not.

I am getting desparate to have some decent case management done, but you know how that goes!

Thanks!

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Hi
I had my uterus/cervix removed 8 years ago. Didn't realize tat meno, no estrogen, dry vaginal tissues & heavy lifting were all against me & leading to me herniating my vagina.
I am now 52 post meno & have vaginal vault prolase & a rectocele. No bladder prolapse so far. But I know it's kind of a domino effect.

I have been using a pessary with good results. It's made a big difference. It's been a lifesaver..LOL & kind of looks like one!

I was in such pain from torn pelvic ligaments connective tissues & muscles, for many weeks, that is graduallly healing. But if it wasn't for the pessary I would have rushed into surgery back in June. That inside vaginal pain & pressure was terrible. There was immediate relief with the pessary just for the fact that it pushed things back up.
I was hesitant at first to remove/insert it myself but am ok about that now.
There are many styles, shapes & sizes of pessaries. There will be one that works for you.

Hope this helps. good luck. And please let me know how you do.

Thumbs up Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

I know there are many different kinds. Can you tell me the model (or what ever official name it has?) so I can look it up? You are the first person I have "talked to" who has had success with one after having the uterus removed! You don't know how much I appreciate hearing from you!

Many, many heartful thanks! isumi

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Hi isumi
the pessary I have is kind of a ring, raised rolled edge but with a solid middle except there are 4 holes. 2 slightly bigger. It can be *folded* when inserted so one of the holes is accessible with a finger for removal. Honestly I don't know the measurements but believe it was a #3. So I am thinking that's diameter. The gyno did try a 4 first, owie! Too big. I did find a site with illustrations once.
She told me I could have sex with this one in. My uro-gyn said Take it OUT for sex! (I agree)
There are other styles & shapes, some called "cube", others I believe have a string, some look (to me) like a pacifier or a ...sex toy!
But since my prolapse is the top of my vagina, because of it not being anchored or stitched after the hyst, this is the one my gyn recommended.
Please be encouraged! I wore this for a couple weeks before I went to see the specialist, he took it out & could not feel/see any vaginal vault prolapse. (other than rectocele) So I went without it for a night & part of the day the next week before I saw him again. STILL nothing had fallen back down. ?
He assured me it could NOT heal own but it's keeping it all in place!
Hope this helped. If I find that pessary site I'll post it here.

Wink Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Thank you! I would appreciate that.

I found a great article with illustrations, but they were all of women with an intact uterus.

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

Hi, sorry to bother you! I am going to see the NP tom. Did you ever find any of the data specific to your Pessary? A name of a company, an illustration, any thing? Thanks! isumi

Re: New - pessary unit after hyst?

ISUMI,

I had my vagina removed several years ago and now have a prolased bladder. I was recently fitted with a Gellhorn pessary (the one that looks like a pacifier). It is doing the job fine, but it is not easy to remove. However, my life is soooo much better now. I can now exercise and therefore not taking pain meds for back pain. This was certainly a life changing event for me!

Good luck.

I very much appreciate your response.

I am so un-informed about things. Is it okay if I ask why you had your vagina removed? I can't understand exactly where the pessary would be situated w/o one. Please excuse my ignorance here. If a pessary would be so helpful to you, with your limitations, then may be there REALLY is hope that it will be a god send for me, too!
