PCOS after Total Hysterectomy

Hi there,

I had a hysterectomy (took my ovaries too) back in August 2004. I was taking Metformin prior to that for PCOS and had my hysterectomy due to endometriosis. Well, after having my hysterectomy, my doctors told me I didn't have to worry about being on it since they took my ovaries, so I thought..."okay, good". Since my surgery, I have trouble losing weight and yesterday when I went to my appt for my anti-depressants (specialist) and the doctor asked me if I was following a pre-diabetic diet for insulin resistance and I said no and told her what they told me in the past (this was my first time seeing this doctor yesterday). She said that it has to do with the endocrine system and I will still be insulin resistant and still have the other symptoms, especially since my most recent lab work showed my fasting glucose to be 104. Is this true? I am totally confused! I see my pcp tomorrow and she advised me to speak to him about putting me on Metformin and to follow a diabetic menu. UGH! Help!

Re: PCOS after Total Hysterectomy

hello,

i am 40 and have been diagnosed with pcos for about 7 years with symptoms for about 15 years. i am developing fibroids in the uterus and have monthly cysts on my ovaries from the metformin. my pcp is behind me if i would like to get a total hysterectomy. she seems to think this will get rid of my symptoms as it sounds your doctor thought also. i think i will go see an endocrinologist and see what they say. are you sorry you had the hysterectomy? what's your age if you dont mind me asking?

Re: PCOS after Total Hysterectomy

PCOS has been linked to Insulin Resistence. If you have IR you are more likely to develop PCOS. When we were TTC I was put on Metformin to balance out my sugar levels (I have PCOS). It worked wonders for me. I lost weight, my acne was better, and I was less tired. More importantly I got pregnant.

Just because your ovaries were taken out doesn't mean you don't need the Metformin. You were probably Insulin Resistant which lead to your PCOS. It's amazing how IR could lead to a problem with your ovaries. Who would have thought. I never would have until we began to try for a baby!! Hope this helps!!!

Re: PCOS after Total Hysterectomy

Same boat, 3 years ago had a Hyst due to PCOS and Adenomyosis (Endometriosis Interna) everything removed but my Cervix. I was a total mess !!!
Well, I haven't been taking the Metformin either. Was on it prior to the hyst and the metformin did help. It help my Sugar level to be around 98. Well decided to go off of it, it went up to 115, now it is up to 125. Yes STYILL INSDULIN RESITANT !! Can't seem to loose weight, my Cholesteral is still waked out 260, along with the high levbels of the bad cholesteral and low levels of good cholesteral.

Still with oily skin, still get pimples UGH !!! Oh, and that most flattering wiskers on the chin and toes...

I saw my Nurse Practioner for my regular yearly check up (not my gyno check up) and said that even though those ovaries are gone, yes you still are PCOS. I have to go for bloodwork again to check my levels and she said I will have to go back on Metformin.

Now my sister who is 39 was just DX with PCOS. Now my daughter is having problems..
