Question Total abdominal hysterectomy, is pain control hard?

I am scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy next week and was wondering how well everyones pain was managed after their surgery? Also, how long did it take to get back on your feet? I have a child in kindergarten, have a busy household and can't stand the idea of being off my feet for very long. I read that some of you were put on a morphine pump after surgery and I am allergic to morphine (severe hives and itching) so that bothers me. Any help from you guys would be great.

Take care and well wishes!

Re: Total abdominal hysterectomy, is pain control hard?

Luvmypugs-
I'm 5 weeks out from TAH BSO so I thought I'd answer your question from my experience. To tell you the truth I don't even remember if I had morphine or not. Isn't that horrible. I was in the hospital for 2 nights and I just slept thru it all. I don't take drugs well either and they make me very nauseous so I warned them several times. They had to give me meds a couple of time for the nauseousness but it wasn't bad at all. When I went home they gave me a narcotic called darcovet. I only used that for maybe two days and probably only a couple of times to get me thru that first week. After that I just used advil and was easily able to cope with the pain. Don't be too scared. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I was more worried about taking the pain killers causing constipation than anything. Come to find out after the surgery unfortunately that I have a rectocele and that is why my constipation scared me so. I had no idea that organs even prolapsed. Anyway I have done other major surgeries without morphine so I know there will be options but speak up before hand and let everyone working on you that you have this problem. Be your own advocate because sometimes the news does not reach everyone that should know. Good luck to you.

Well, I imagine that you've already had your surgery. What did they end up giving you for pain?

Re: Total abdominal hysterectomy, is pain control hard?

No Missy actually I did not have the hysterectomy. Unfortunately I had to have an emergency appendectomy on the 8th and they would not do the hysterectomy the following Monday. Now I am scheduled for 2/14 but they called yesterday to say they may have a cancellation on 2/4. I'm hoping for the 4th so that I can get it over with.

I had to stay in the hospital for 3 days with the appendectomy because of severe infection. They sent me home with Lortab which worked okay so at least I know what works. In the hospital they gave me Demerol and Dilaudid along with Phenergan for nausea and that worked okay as well.

Thanks for the concern,
Take care all,
