Is it possible to get cysts on ovaries after hysterectomy?

Had hysterectomy 2 years ago and kept ovaries..I feel like I have a cyst on one of them since I had a few of them before hysterectomy..I was wondering if that was possible and how do they go away since before they disappear with a couple periods..now I don't have periods so how does one get rid of them or can they still disappear on their own?

Yes, you can still get cysts on your ovaries. Unless you've gone through menopause, your body is still cycling, just not bleeding. So if the cysts don't feel like they've gone away, or they are causing problems (bloating, interferring with bladder/bowel functions, etc) then you need to go to your doctor. He/she can order an ultrasound of your pelvis to look at the cysts.

Hi Need healing,
I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and was wondering the same thing since I have had two Laproscopies for complex ovarian cysts and have had loads that didn't need to be removed, so I have been surprised that I haven't had any (they left my ovaries). Well that is, until now. I just started getting that familiar pain. So I'm thinking it is.
I don't know what is going to happen, but I suppose I will have to go to the doc if it gets worse... actually unbearable.
Good luck!
Liz

Re: Is it possible to get cysts on ovaries after hysterectomy?

Hello ladies,

The risk of developing ovarian cysts will most definitely remain as long as your ovaries are there. Cysts will go away by regressing back into your ovaries. They grow at the beginning of your cycle and then regress as you get close to your "period". In your cases, you will obviously not shed your endometrial lining since you don't have a uterus but the hormones that are active during your cycles are still being produced and your ovaries are behaving as if you still have all of your organs.

I am rather new to the ovarian cyst thing and I hate this immensely. I was diagnosed with an 8 cm simple cyst about a year ago and found out yesterday that the blasted thing is still there, same size and everything .. I also happened to have a different radiologist do the ultrasound this time and he said that there was a tiny spot of calcification (along the wall of the cyst) which occurs when a cyst has been there for a long time. He said it is completely harmless and that I can schedule my next ultrasound for a longer time frame (I have been keeping a close eye on this thing). Although I am happy that the stupid thing has not grown any bigger, I am now worried over this calcification thing (however small).

I have spent more time and worry over this thing than I care to admit and will do practically anything other than have surgery. The thought of having surgery under general anaesthesia for something that is most likely benign pisses me off (I believe that unless absolutely necessary, medical intervention should be kept to a bare minimum). My general practitioner, three different gynecologists and two radiologists have told me that the thing is harmless but there is always that little bit of worry that all is not perfect within (although i suppose it never is). My gynecologist has told me that it is a benign mucinous cyst (don't know how she knows it is mucinous and not serous .. statistics probably) and she gave me the choice .. removal through surgery or regular ultrasounds. I opted for the ultrasounds for now.

Hang in there and here's hoping that your cysts regress on their own. All the best.

Before hysterectomy and I would get them, there was the hope that I only had to go a couple weeks and when my period came that usually did the trick..now with no period, not sure how my body works or how they disappear or if it takes longer or what?
