vertical incision/vertical scar recovery - Hysterectomy Message Board

Anyone here have a full hysterectomy with a vertical scar up to the breastbone? My sister is going in for this soon and is wondering what the recovery will be like. She has a massive growth on her ovary that may or may not be cancer and in case it is, they want to be able to remove it without cutting it into pieces, so she has to have the long vertical incision. She is most concerned about her recovery and feels confident her growth either is not cancerous or is all-inclusive cancer if it is (no spreading), based on tests she's had. Any information or experience with this would be appreciated so I can share it with her. I will be one of her primary caregivers in recovery.

Meghan, I'm sorry to hear that your sister has such a large growth and I pray that it is not cancer. I didn't have an abdominal incision, but there are women here who have. Hopefully they'll join in soon.

Thank you, Pickle eyes. It's good to know there are some here who've had the vertical incision. I'll check daily for postings. My sister goes in mid-March for her surgery.

Anyone with a vertical, please post soon. My sister goes in for her surgery in 5 days. I've learned she's actually have both incisions, a horizontal and the full vertical up to her breastbone. She's going to be somewhat "flapped" open to work on. She's feeling a mix of confident and anxious, but is not happy at all about the incisions she'll have and how that will make recovery harder.
