surgery canceled

I was scheduled for a hysterectomy next week, and 2 days ago I did my pre op bloodscreening, and EKG, yesterday I got a call from doctors office, saying my surgery was canceled, due to something the doctor found in my blood screening, and that I also needed a pap smear before surgery. The receptionist wouldnt/couldnt tell me what and why they found, to stop surgery. She said the doctor would call me. I am anemic, and taking iron right now.

I have 2 questions,

1. what do they screen for on a blood test before surgery? what exactly are they looking for? what would/could stop the surgery?

2. How long should someone take provera ? I keep reading about all the bad effects it can give, and it maskes me nervous. Most people taking it , only do so for a short time, ( under 3 months, for fibroids, not birth control ) What exactly do they do to stop my bleeding?

thanks for any imput, I am at wits end.

Re: surgery canceled

Hi Kakinlaw, I don't know anything about the Depo.

As far as the blood test, there are several things they might check before the surgery. The CBC (complete blood count) could show several things that could concern a doctor, but I'm not sure what else beyond the anemia that might postpone the surgery. Anemia would certainly postpone it. Did the doctor run any other tests?
