Thickening of the Uterine Lining

I am a 57-year old female, who is approximately 70 lbs overweight. I just had in internal ultrasound which showed a 5 millimeter thickening of the lining of my uterus. I have no symptoms, no cramping , no spotting or bleeding. My gyn told me that 5 ml is on the high end of being normal, but she wants to do a biopsy of the uterus anyway.

Even though my doctor told me not to worry, I am very worried...also now I am so scared, I know I will do something about my weight. Will losing weight help me to keep from getting uterine cancer becuase of the estrogen effect?

Thanks for any insight you can give me...I just found out about this today and am still trying to digest it.

Re: Thickening of the Uterine Lining

Dear SBH - RELAX!!!! Yes, 5 is slightly high but being overweight is probably the cause of it. Your fat cells create estrogen which is unopposed by progesterone and the uterine lining thickens. Mine was 25 when discovered. Biopsy showed complex hyperplasia atypia which is the worst of the hyperplasias (overgrowth). Gynecological oncologist recommended total hysterectomy because 25-30% of these develop cancer if left untreated. After much research, I opted for Megace, a strong progestin, (later switched to Prometrium and still taking it) instead of surgery. I told the dr. when he could prove I had cancer, then we would talk hyster. Over the past 10 years I've had 4-5 biopsies, 2 D&Cs and 7-8 ultrasounds. The Megace resolved the complex atypia and my US this past month shows my endometrium at 5. Dr. is happy with that. Moral: Your dr. is being cautious, but the odds are greatly in your favor that nothing is wrong. If she does put you on a progestin, I highly recommend Prometrium.... it is bio-identical. Good luck.

Re: Thickening of the Uterine Lining

Did you have any side effects while taking this?
