Are immune disorders hereditary??

My daughter is 14 mos old. She was scheduled for surgery yesterday. She has urinay reflux and needs ureteral reimplants. They decided to cancel the surgery because of my antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. My ana has been positive in the past. I have also had 3 miscarrriages. My blood is thick. I am currently on aspirin therapy. My daughter has to see a hematologist before they reschedule her surgery. My questions:

1) Are immune disorders inherited?

2) If so, can it be detected as soon as 14 months?

3) Has anyone's child undergone surgery for urinay reflux?

I am so confused right now. I would feel so guilty if my kids have this problem too.

I would appreciate any input.

Micki

Re: Are immune disorders hereditary??

Hi there. I am sorry for your problems and for your daughters problems. In answer to your question, some immune disorders are inheredited. 2 of my children have c4 deficiencies, as well as my husband and myself having slight ones. I don't know if your disorder is hereditary or not but I do know some are. Good luck and I hope she doesn't have it.

Re: Are immune disorders hereditary??

I know some Autoimmune are heridetary. I have Autoimmune Hepatitis and it can be hereditary as well. But there are no tests for my children to see if they can possibly get it some day. It's a wait and see thing which is hell. Good luck to you and your family.

Hi Micki,

I am no expert but from my understanding, APS, is considered to be a hereditary disorder. It appears that since your baby daughter is being referred to a hematologist, the medical community may be able to determine if she is affected before they proceed with any type of surgery. I know with the blood disorder Factor V Leiden that it can also be passed down genetically, but it isn't always. That's the good news--it is not always passed down! There are blood tests to determine whether it was or not, so possibly that may true too with the APS. We can only hope! Please keep us informed how your daughter is doing.

You mentioned that you were positive for APS and on aspirin therapy. I too am on that therapy as well as on a blood circulation medication. Are you periodically retested while on the aspirin therapy? Can you tell me if I am tested for the Antiphospholipid Antibodies will these medications affect the results?
