Auto immune disorders affecting perephial nerves - Immune Disorders Message Board

I posted on the foot board, so I appologize for the duplication. I am just trying to get as much info. as possible.

My daughter has had a no. of A/I disorders and for the past 2 yrs. has had a problem w/ her left foot. After numerous conservative therapies, her foot specialist thought the only other option was to do a "bunionette" surgery. That was done 6 mo. ago. She was getting better for a couple of mo. and then went down hill again and is back on crutches. She can't put any weight on her foot at all. We have an apt. to go back in and remove the screw in her foot...but the Dr. is really at a loss to understand what is going on. All Xrays and bone scans are normal. (He says that some people's systems just dont do well w/ the screws and taking it out sometimes relieves the pain). But that if this does not work, he is at a loss.

Are there A/I disorders that affect the nerves? This Dr. who is our 3rd Dr. and is a foot specialist, doesn't seem to know a lot about A/I's. Any help would be great.

You may want to go to a Neurologist for your answer instead of dealing with a Podiatrist. harry!

This may be a long shot but I have Guillian-Barre` Syndrome. It affects your perephial nerves. You may ask your doctor about that. I hope it has nothing to do with GBS. Take care.

i know of a couple of people that had the same problem. The auto immune system is in overdrive, and attacks things that it shouldn't. Might be that her system has decided that the screw shouldn't be there and wants it out; there, it is attacking it. I would have her see someone about the autoimmune disorder. I would suspect that the foot problems will not be eliminated until the root of the problem is treated.

Thank you for your replies. As it is, we did have the screws taken out and that seemed to be the problem. My daughter is healing well. I hope this is the last of her problems, but I have heard that w/auto immune disorders...new ones can pop up.

Does anyone know if there are Drs. that specialize in A/I disordrs? Most Drs. have seemed unknowledgable about them.
