| Re: what is ANA+
Hello! ANA+ stands for Antinuclear Antibody, The + sign , means "positive", obviously a - sign would mean "negative".
This is an unusual antibody that is directed against structures within the nucleus of the cell. Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) are found in patients whose immune system is predisposed to cause inflammation against their own body tissues. Antibodies that are directed against one's own tissues are referred to as autoantibodies. The propensity for the immune system to work against its own body is referred to as autoimmunity. ANAs indicate the possible presence of autoimmunity.
An autoimmune disease only occurs in people who carry the genetic predisposition to ever having an abnormal immune response (autoimmune , all one word) to *self*. The predisposition is in these mutated genes. Not everyone carrying these genes will ever have an autoimmune response, they are just more likely to. It takes a specific combination of enviromental factors , such as drugs, radiation, viruses , and/or self factors such as hormones, insulin, specific to you, to trigger these genes. Some of these genes in some people also carry an hereditary factor such as diabetes, psoriasis etc. This is a mutated gene carrying a predisposition to a specific disease itself. The disease or condition manifest in each individual, is simply the pathogenic result of the abnormal immune response in that person. (auto= Greek for self) Autoimmune .
No diet can alter, stop or prevent an autoimmune disease, the predisposition lies in the DNA. There is no cure for autoimmune diseases, (there are over 80) but they all have the same underlying cause, the genetic predisposition to ever having one. The keyword is control.
