Question Low IgA?

What does an IgA blood level of 39 mean?

From what I understand normal is 80-350 mg/dl, but it must be <10 mg/dl for a diagnosis of Selective IgA Deficiency.

So, can IgA levels be moderately low, or is this most likely a lab error?

If it really is low, is it low enough to be experiencing symptoms?

Re: Low IgA?

Hello Heather,

I just noticed your posting. Each lab has different normal values. The one I go to the IgA normals are 68 to 378.....mine is 80 right now which is elevated for me. Yours definately is below normal.

I have had a low IgA since childhood and used to take Human Gobulin shots weekly as a teen. I never had another shot after the birth of my first child at age 20. My health just seemed to turn around so I promptly forgot about it.

Now many years later I have several autoimmune disorders ( is there a connection?) I have Celiac Disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Some of my testing is not correct because I have a history of low IgA. If you have any allergies or problems going on then your IgA will be higher than usual. Mine is normally below normal but is slightly elevated from my Celiac.

What symptoms are you experiencing? What kind of Doctor are you seeing?

Oleander
