| | Coeliac diagnosis without a biopsy
I have been diagnosed with Coeliac about a month ago which was a huge relief. I have been telling various gp's over many years that my tummy isn't right. I was always told that i had IBS and to cut out whatever I thought wasn't suiting my diet and causing my symptomes.
This had been going on for well over 15 years!
I asked to be tested for wheat intolerence but was told there is no such test.
I also get symptomes from dairy.
Anyway I was refered to see a hormone specialist as my calcium levels were on the low side and my parathyroid was overworked.
I have also been diagnosed with hypothyroidism 5 years ago and that is now under control thanks to medication.
This doctor asked why I went to my gp in the first place etc. Talked about my symptomes, family history and he said quite convincingly that I did not have IBS but Coeliacs.
I had been following a restricted wheat diet for a long time now but not banning it totally.
I had Coeliac screens done (bloods) and all came back negative, he seemd to think that was to be expected as I did not consume enough wheat.
He was however quite convinced that I have coeliacs and did advise me against the biopsy as it was not needed.
I could have kissed him, at last after all those years of suffering I had an answer, I am not mad!
I have been following strict gluten free diet for a month now and very little dairy and what a difference it has made.
No more cramping, diarrhoea, bloating and worst of all terrible non stop flatulence.
I feel like a new woman. Pity it took so many years to get an answer or in other words someone to take me seriously.
If you are in any doubts, keep hasseling your gp until you get satisfaction.
