Is it infant colic? or Lactose intolerance? or both?

Hi,

I read many articles on infant colic. My daughter suffers from excessive crying. As given in many articles, her crying got reduced, when she reach 3 months old. Her growth is quite satisfactory. But still she is crying continualsly for 1 hour. This is mostly after feeding her mother milk. She stops crying only after vomiting the milk. Then she went into sleep. No other problems like motions, breathing etc. Is it due to Lactose intolerance? Or just colic symptoms? . My daughter born with less wait(2.2Kgs).Now my daughter age is 3 1/2 Months. Can any one please clarify on it.

Thanks,
Niranjan.

Could be reflux. My cousin kept taking her son back to the doctor -- was told colic, irritable bowel... Finally they prescribed zantac and she has a completely different child. It apparently hurt him so much after he ate and he only felt better if he threw up afterwards.

Definitely sounds like acid reflux. My daughter would cry during feeds since the first time she breast fed. An hour of crying is significant and you should definitely make an appointment with your pediatrician to discuss your concerns and insist he work her up for GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease)

Your daughter definitely has the clinical signs. You poor thing....having to have lived through 3 months of your baby's crying. Your doctor should have done something well before this for your sake as well as the baby's. The test that will show for sure is called a Barium swallow or Upper GI. It's when the baby drinks a small bottle of barium and then an X-ray is taken to see if it regurgitates back up the esophagus (tube from the throat to the stomach). If it does then there are various treatments...some as simple as thickening the milk sith rice cereal to make it a bit heavier and keeping her elevated an hour after each feeding. And sometimes you need medications that will decrease her acid secretions in her stomach such as pepcid. In the worst cases surgery is necessary but for the most part this corrects itself when the baby is able to sit up on her own. My daughter's didn't and she is now 13 years old & still has reflux which is monitored closely but hasn't required surgery yet.

Please don't hesitate any longer in getting this checked out. If you doctor ignores you insist on a referral to a gastroenterologist. Good luck...Goody

Re: Is it infant colic? or Lactose intolerance? or both?

Colic is usually caused by the baby being gassy and their stomaches ache from the bloating. My daughter had cholic until she was 3 months but she never vomited up her milk. I breast fed until she was 12 months and she never had a problem with it. Are you breast feeding? She may be allergic to something you are eating. Usually babies who are lactose intollerant don't have too much of a problem with the mothers milk. Maybe try drinking lactose free milk and eating less foods with milk in them like cheese and dairy. See if your baby does any better. As long as your baby is gaining weight she should be ok

I used to hold my baby on her tummy for her colic and rub or pat her back and that would calm her down. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Is it infant colic? or Lactose intolerance? or both?

My friends little girl had the refux problem, hers was treated with medication. Then when my friend had her little guy they thought it was happening all over again, but he ended up being lactose intolerant, they switched him to a soy based formula and he was fine after that. I thought my DD had colic too but my pediatrician told me colic doesn't last past 3 months, and she was over 4 months when I brought her in for that, he said she was just a fussy baby and would outgrow it, which she did, but she didn't puke much so I think there's a bit of a difference there. I would ask to see a specialist. Goodluck.
