4 Month Old Girl's 1st Tooth, Anything I Need To Know? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

My daughter's first tooth is starting to show in the front of her mouth at the bottom. I know that I need to make a dentist appointment for her, right? Are there special doctors for babies, or does she just go to a regular dentist? I haven't heard anyone say that I'm supposed to brush it, so am I? What other things do I need to know about this first tooth if anything?

My only suggestion is to keep it clean, you can use a soft washcloth or a babys toothbrush, youc an call a pediatric dentist but i don't think they will see her yet but they may all dentist have there own rules. I couldn't get either one of my kids in and I called several. I would ask the dentists office you call they will tell you over the phone but like i said they most likely won't see her unless there is something wrong.. Don't really have to use toothpaste just keep it clean that is really it.. You must be a great mom to be asking about this..
She will be fine, if you really want to know for sure I would like i said just call around and ask a dentist office and theyw ill tell you over the phone... That is what I would do...

right now it is ok for just her pediatrician to take a look at it. I think the normal advice is to take your kid to the dentist by their 1st birthday. I would use a soft cloth for now, it's easier and just wipe off that tooth after food and before bedtime. When you do go for the toothbrush you can start by using water. Then there are a bunch of good non-floride toothpastes for toddlers that is safe for them to swallow.

I think it is early still to see a dentist, by the 1st birthday is good advice and I would look for a pediatric one when you do go. I know I found a kit in the baby's department that had a soft latex type finger brush that you put on your finger, plus 3 other stages of brushes to graduate too depending on how old or how many teeth, it also came with baby toothpaste with no flouride. It's best to get them used to brushing now so they don't start fussing about it later.

Keep it clean, you can get infant toothbrushes (gerber makes one) that just slips over your finger, all i used was a soft clean cloth a few times a day. Just keep it clean, there is no needs as was already said to take her to a dentist, all they would do is look at it, say it looks fine, to bring her back if there are any problems, not really worth the trip. Her doctor will take a look at them at her checkups and let youknow if he/she believes there are any problems with them. Just keep them clean, and floss gently once she has enough teeth to do so and is eating foods that will get stuck.
