2mth old having a soar throat? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

My 2 mth old cried and screamed a lot the other day. After that his voice has changed and it sounds like he has a soar throat. His voice has become heavy and when he cries he sounds a big boy!

Can such little babies get soar throat?

My son caught strep at 4 months. Babies can get strep or pharyngitis, though its not super common. Mine cried non stop after the 2nd day and began refusing to eat (swallowing hurt, I'm sure) so since it was over the weekend I took him into the ER where they kept telling me he was just "teething."

I insisted that I wasn't going home empty handed, my baby was sick, and they sent me home with antibiotics. Monday when I followed up with his ped, he took one look in his mouth and DX'd him. Told me that it was one of the worst cases he'd ever seen in a child that young, and this was after 2 days of antibiotics! He said that my insistance that something was really wrong with him and getting the antibiotics saved him from being hospitalized that day. So go with your gut when it comes to stuff like that! They can't tell us what's wrong, but you know your baby better than anyone else and have to speak up for him!

So far he has been eating fine. What other symptoms i should look out for?
What is strep? Your reply would be really appreacitated.
I have called his ped and am waiting for them to call back.

He could have just strained his vocal cords. Just keep an eye on if he's having any trouble eating or swallowing, and look for the normal signs of infection, fever, tired (sleeping more than normal can be hard to diagnose in a baby who probably sleeps most of the time anyway). At that age his immunity may not be good enough to keep an infection away so take him in if he developes a fever. Your boy is kind of in the grey a little bit, any infant under 2 months needs to see a doctor right away if they get a fever (they don't have good immunity at that point, no needles and there own immunity hasn't fully kicked in).
If he's eating find, no fever or other signs of illness than it's most likely he just strained his cords. Just like adults do if they yell and scream a lot.

My 43 day old grandson developed "Thrush" in his mouth..and had to have antibiotics for 12 days..He cried alot and there was a bit of whitish color in his mouth..after starting the anti- we could tell he felt alot better!
Look in mouth and see if you can spot anything...hope this helps you out some!
