11 month old won't crawl - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Hi guys,

i have a problem with my son he can't crawl and just turned 11 months yesterday. When i put him on the floor for tummy time he either rolls onto his back or plants his face in the floor and cries. I feel like a terrible mother because I can't seem to teach him anything. All the other babies I know that are the same age or younger can walk by now. I sit and worry that there is something wrong with him. I have tried everything and nothing works. Anyone else have this problem?

Alot of babies don't crawl. Some will skip right to walking. Crawling isn't even considered an official "milestone" for lots of babies.

More importantly, can he go easily from lying to sitting positions, pick up tiny objects with his thumb and forefinger, possibly pull up to his knees or feet, roll around easily, etc.

My neigbors son never crawled and didn't walk til 15 months. Now he's 2 and just as active and coordinated as any 2 year old.

I remember the pediatrician told her that the biggest thing to notice is if you put him on the floor on his tummy, can he get into a sitting position. If not, he may need to be examined for muscle tone or other possible problems. Of course, if it's really concerning to you, discuss it with your pediatrician anyway. He/she should be able to ease your mind!

DS didn't crawl until his was almost a year old. and he HATED tummy time. My cousin's kids never did crawl. And we really didn't think ds was going to crawl -- that he'd go straight to walking. So we were really surprised on day when he crawled under a table. crawling isn't a milestone 'cuz there are just so many different forms of crawling -- creeping, crawling backwards, crabwalk, rolling around...

BTW, DS didn't walk either until shortly after he turned 16 months. He's perfectly normal develpmentally, he just had better things to do. And he knew he could get places faster if he held onto our hands and RAN or he crawled.

My youngest son never did crawl. Same as you when he turned 11 months and wasn't even rolling over I was scared. I was comparing him to his older brother who crawled at 6 months and was walking at 9 months. The pediatrician told me not to worry that everything was normal. Then a few days before he turned a year old he started rolling over and he would roll and roll and roll really fast until he got were he wanted to go. He did this for several weeks then he started pulling up to the couch and would walk holding on. By the time he was 14 months he was walking and running. He is now 8 years old and is very good at baseball and basketball very quick and well coordinated. So don't worry I'm sure the same will happen with your son.

My first son did not crawl and hated tummy time too.... every kid is different. Now my 2nd loves to crawl and thus is not walking yet. Try giving your little one a walker that he can push around and walk behind. My first loved that!
