Baby picking at sore/wound - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Hello,

My 16-month-old son has had a sore on his chin for months now. It won't heal because he picks at it and also likely due to the fact that it's often covered in his drool and whatever else is dribbling down his chin. The doctor said the sore was simply that; my son is healthy is every other way.

We've tried a lot of different things: A&D ointment--whether putting on a little or smothering it, during both night and day; same with Neosporin. We've had some success; sometimes, the thing is very close to healing.

Another big factor: he still uses a pacifier--which causes drool--but only during sleeptime (we're going to phase it out soon).

If any of you have had this experience, please impart any wisdom you might have.

My son had a chin scrape that wouldn't heal. It kind of got oozy. The doctor told me that neosporin wasn't strong enough and gave me some kind of prescription antibiotic ointment for him. That dried it up and it healed in about 3 or 4 days. He wasn't picking though, so I don't know what to suggest about that. As far as the drooling goes, there's not much you can do.

But maybe a better ointment would speed healing at least. My biggest concern with him picking it and prolonging the healing would be scarring. So I'd ask for something that would help speed up the process.

Maybe you can try putting gloves on his hands. My parents did that to me when I had gotten the chicken pox. It worked pretty well

Have you tried just using that liquid bandage stuff on it?It does have some strog fumes when you use it,but you can blow on the area while you apply it and keep fanning until it starts to dry and that smell goes away.Or hold him in your arms in front of a fan once you have applied it.This liquid stuff is really good.I would ask the doc before using it though just to make sure it is okay.Just a suggestion,Marcia

Can you put a bandaid on it? That might stop him from picking at it and a good bandaid could stop the drool from getting all over it. Keeping it dry, clean and away from his hands.
