Belly Button Question - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

My sons umbilical cord took 20 days to fall off. From what I've heard that's
longer than usual. Anyway, for the past 2 days his belly button as been
oozing. Is this normal? I'm still putting alcohol on it with every diaper change.
His one month dr. appointment isn't for another week. Should I be concerned?

It's normal to ooze a bit. Camille's did that too. I was told just to keep alchohol on it and refrain from getting it wet until it looked completely healed and didn't ooze anymore. He should be fine til his doc's appt. unless you see redness, swelling, profuse discharge, or foul odor. All of those can mean infection and should be checked out ASAP.

my first sons belly button did this too, however when i took him in for a well check up they looked at it and said it was oozing too much and asked if i had been dilgent about the care-- of course i was right? well the doc pushed down on each side of the belly button to make it "pop" out. when she did it popped out and showed a ton of goop in there that i didn't know existed! she removed that and it bled so he used this charcol stick thing to stop the bleeding. needless to say i checked this right away with baby #2. hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses. I too clean it regularly but I will have his doctor have
a better look inside as yours did Nyxin. We have an appointment Monday morning.
