3 week old CONSTANT SCREAMING - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

3 week old grandson constantly screams every waking moment and that is almost always. seems to have colic but a very bad case if it is. We have tried Mylacon, Stomach ease (herbal) and Doctor put him on prescription Zantac. No HELP. He has had Avent bottles, gerber, platex and Dr. Brown's bottles. He screams, thrashes his arms and legs and nothing seems to help. It is so sad. My son and baby brother had colic and I have never seen anything like this. Doctor changed formula also. No help. Doctor says maybe an ultra-sound is next. When you can get him to burp they are BIG. He is hard to burp but when he does they are good ones. Any suggestions?

Did he change to a soy formula? I suggest that, and give it three days to kick in. I also recommend a product called Gripe Water. I'm so sorry about this little guy. DS was a screamer too...all day long. His little belly was so gassy, yet he was also always starving. You could also try some massage. Softly rub the belly in circular motions, then gently pump his legs. This will force some of the gas out.

The "baby whisperer" also has some tricks that sometimes worked for me.

The 4 "s's"
Swaddle
Side
Shake
Shush

Swaddle him
Hold him sideways
Very gently shake "I prefer the word jiggle" him
And softly give a continuous "shhhhhhhh" into his ear.
Do it all at the same time

kiera, thanks for responding. We have done everything you suggested except the doctor did not change to soy yet, just a low iron formula. He is getting an ultra-sound as we speak, so I'll let you know what happens. It is just so sad. Like I said I had a brother and son that had colic but this is the worst I have seen.

It sounds like he may be allergic to milk-based formula. I would switch to soy (I've found Isomil is the most gentle on their stomachs, even though Good Start Supreme has a soy formula). Isomil also claims to reduce colic after 3 days of being on it. My first changed dramatically for the better when we switched her. We started my 2nd right out on it and she has been a happy baby from the start. If it is colic, there is a book that my doctor recommended The Happiest Baby on the Block. It has some good suggestions for calming the baby.

This sounds exactly like my DD until I put her on Soy formula. She is on Isomil. She was on Goodstart then we went to Isomil Soy and my DH bought Goodstart Soy but it all started back up again so now she is back to Isomil and she is my sweet baby girl. I'm telling you my poor baby was so unhappy until last Friday. We even mixed the Isomil with her old Goodstart for 3 days just so it wasn't a drastic change. She was fine until DH bought her the wrong formula. He thought it was what she was on because he remembered goodstart so he bought it in Soy. Isomil is the one that is best I feel. It is for Jade anyway. I hope this is all that is wrong with your precious one. I know how it feels not to be able to help them. Good luck!
