here we go with this pumping thing again. I may just give that up lol, anyway, I was wondering if it was normal to have sore breasts after pumping when you first start pumping. I have only tried pumping 2 times so far, and not the nipple area, but the breast tissue area is sore, kinda like when you are pg, although I know that is not it lol, as I am only 4 wks pp and we have not done anything yet lol, it has only started since pumpng yesterday, and then I pumped today. any suggestions? thanks
My nipples got sore when I first began pumping, but not any other part of my breast. You may blocked milk ducts, which I hear can be painful. The LLL has a wonderful web site, with FAQ's. The have answers to EVERYTHING! You can also email them with questions or concerns, and they are super supporitive! Don't give up yet! DS is 8 weeks, and I'm pumping and storing 2-3 times a day. It DOES get better!
I agree with Karen, you may have some clogged ducts. It can hurt like the dickens. Use warm compresses on your breasts and take hot showers just to let the water hit your breasts. You can take Ibuprofen for pain, and massage them as well to get that milk moving. I too had sore nipples with the pump in the beginning, but not the breasts. Good luck!

May I ask why you are pumping? The baby will be much more efficient at getting the milk out.
To answer your question, yes it is normal for them to be sore when you first start pumping. Plugged ducts feel kind of lumpy and would be very tender and hot in that area. Is that what it feels like?
What kind of pump are you using? Also, please know that how much milk you get out while pumping is not an indication of how much milk you actually have. I could never get more than an ounce out with a pump.
I am pumping for a few reasons, I have a 4yr old that wants in on the feeding action here and there, and sometimes we want to go out and I would like a drink with dinner or something and this way I know it is not going to ds.
There are no hot spots, just soreness, but not today, it is gone.
I realize that about what I pump is not all I have, as I still have a fullness when I am done pumping lol, I got 3 oz out yesterday, and there was still some fullness, so I am good to go lol. I am using a medela double ease pump. thanks for the info.
