Soulcatcher is right...one trick I learned was to lie the baby on her back on your lap with her feet to your stomach and raised up. Bring your knees down so that the baby's head is lowered.....alternate the baby's legs with the knees tucked as close to the abdomen in a bicycle like motion. Lift the baby directly up to your shoulder and attempt to burp. You should get a response in the form of a great sounding burp!!!

Keep repeating this and make it fun by counting the exercise out with the baby in a songlike fashion. I found it helped and have passed this on to many new mothers and it did seem to help. Hope it works for you too.
