first meal!!!

yeah we made it to our first meal. My ds turned 4 months old 2 days ago, and we had our 4 month appointment today, he is now 14 lbs. 2 oz. and is 24 1/2 inches long. But looks like a big boy, cause he has a bigger bone structure. Anyway, the doc gave me the go ahead to start food and for any of those wondering about how to feed them and when etc... this is what my doc told me to do. He told me to do cereal (any) with yellow veggies first, at the same time is fine, he told me the yellow veggies are carrots, squash and sweet potatoe. Then to go to the green veggies, then the fruits, after that, I can add in apple juice 4 oz a day. He told me to feed him like I would eat, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and when we do the apple juice, to add that inbetween meals somewhere, anywhere. I was told to use either breastmilk or formula to mix the cereal. I guess I give him as much as he will eat, til he gives me signs of no more. Well he did awesome with the first feeding tonight, my dd spit out her first spoonful lol, he didn't and was eager to eat more, he opened his mouth right away. Now the only sign I got that I think is a sign is that he started to spit out the food, after eating about half what I put in the bowl, which was almost half a small jar of food, and probably a tablespoon of the cereal. I guess he did well.

Was this a sign of not wanting anymore, the spitting it out, what else is there, turning the head? thanks

Re: first meal!!!

So just out of curiosity, do you still feed him normal bottles of formula in between or do they not need that anymore? DS has a couple more months at least before he's ready.

Re: first meal!!!

yes, sorta, after feeding them the solids, you formula feed or breast feed, and still feed inbetween if he wants.

Re: first meal!!!

I read somewhere that you should give the rice cereal always AFTER you breastfeed a little bit, because if you don't then obviously the baby will be too full to eat after rice and this will diminish your milk supply. Also I thought you start w/ cereal for a while first, at 4mo, and veggies 1mo or 2 later. I guess different people are giving different advice.

For being too full, the baby will start spitting up, lose interest, turn head away, become fussy, not want to open mouth.

I'm still debating as to when I should start, my DS is 4mo, people are saying 4 or 6mo, and I just can't decide. He is not showing any sings of interest when I eat, so I think I will let that decide. My DS turned 4mo, 4days ago and is around 18 lbs, and breastfeeds around 8 times/day, so I think he is still ok.

Re: first meal!!!

The spitting out could mean he is full, or it could mean he is playing! But usually when DS starts spitting out I quit feeding it to him. I mix his cereal with water though, he likes it a lot better that way! As for the veggies, I thought you did the green ones first, because the yellow ones, especially sweet potatoes, are sweeter and after they eat those they won't want the more bitter veggies. Just what everyone I know has always done, but every doc tells you something different!
Glad it went well!
